“Too Stoned” with George Spits and Slightly Stoopid

CrazyHood.com recently sat down with the incredibly talented George Spits of the Llamabeats crew for an exclusive 4/20 interview and the re-release of his song “Too Stoned” featuring Slightly Stoopid

Originally off of Spits’ mixtape entitled The Dub Sack (2016), this special digital & physical version (dropping today 4/20/2020) contains a dub instrumental B-side of the track. 7′ 45rpm vinyl will also be available for sale exclusively at www.llamabeatsmusic.com.

The instrumental to this was originally made in 2014 with Kyle McDonald and Paul Wolstencroft of Slightly Stoopid at their studio “The Lab” in San Diego. Spits had just started producing for Stoopid, and this riddim was intended to be used for their album “Meanwhile…Back at the Lab”, but it never made the cut. Shortly after, Spits decided to surprise the band with his version which included his raps and half the chorus. The band gave him the blessing to have it, and Kyle ended up spitting a verse and completing the chorus.

Originally introduced to each other in 2008 by a good friend and partner in rhyme James “J-Wiz” Wisner (Producer/Engineer for Stoopid), it wasn’t until 2014 that Spits and Stoopid started working together.

George Spits & Slightly Stoopid

J-Wiz knew I grew up on their music, and since he was already working with them he made it a point to get me on their radar early on in our work relationship.” Spits continues; “I’ve been blessed to be a part of the last two albums that Stoopid has released since I started with them (“Meanwhile…Back at the Lab” and “Everyday Life, Everyday People.”)”

Building that friendship throughout the years and creatively working on projects helped develop an incredible artistic chemistry between Spits and Stoopid one that can be heard on “Too Stoned”.

“One day (yes … while very stoned indeed) I pulled the track up on my own and felt inspired to write some bars to it.” Spits continues; “As soon as I layed the lyrics all down, I sent it over to Kyle and not only did he fuck with the track, but he ended up adding his own verse and making the hook come together perfectly. I had Master Fade add a couple touches to the final verse, and the result is what you hear.”

“We have a bunch of riddims that we have made over the years just like this one that have never really even had any lyrics written to them, nonetheless seen the light of day.” – George Spits

One of the dope things that I personally enjoy about George Spits and the Llamabeats music/sound is the detail that goes into each song. From adlibs, sounds, background voices, specific instruments at certain times during the song. It’s almost as if the guys produce mini movies with every song that they make. George admits they spend arguably too much time cooking up even a 5 second moment, but that’s to ensure that the listener is getting a unique experience the whole way through.

Llamabeats

George says; “We all grew up listening to all sorts of music from progressive rock, to free jazz, to salsa … watching and even idolizing a lot of movies which had very unique soundtracks that touched on all sorts of genres and styles of music as well. Some of our musical heroes such as Pink Floyd, J Dilla, Quincy Jones, Madlib, and The Mars Volta have been far from constricted or narrow minded with their styles. This obviously even led to us even creating our concept album “MOVIE” (the latest project by Llamabeats) which was crafted with all that in mind.”

The song “Too Stoned” is filled with unique details that amplifies the listeners experience. So it was only right to authentically create “Too Stoned” while being ahem… too stoned. *Cough, cough* remember the guys are giving you an incredible *cough, cough* listening experience, take a hit with them.

“Not gonna lie, I find getting too stoned to be a very simple process.” George says. “All weed enthusiasts alike, from veterans to rookies, can easily reach the highly coveted “too stoned” state in many ways.” George continues; “For the first time smoker, I feel it’s easiest to achieve simply by ensuring that your cannabis is potent (aka “extremely sticky” or “loud af”), and that you have consumed it properly. My first time smoking weed properly and reaching “too stoned” mode felt like a fuckin mushroom trip, and I only smoked one bowl. For the everyday cannabis user, I find that switching consumption methods (i.e. moving to edibles, or switching over to dabbing concentrates) works best in order to reach that full re-awakening into the land of getting way too fucking baked.”

Friends of Monsters (Llamabeats & AYNT)

Llamabeats have a lot of upcoming projects, and in May the group will be releasing the first single off their upcoming collaborative album “Friends of Monsters” with fellow emcee and producer AYNT. The single features the legend Chali 2na of Jurassic 5! “I’m also working on a new album with a band of weirdos I’ve been producing called BARTMAN! Go check their instrumental album “I’m Tripping Balls” produced by your boy.” George continues; “For the recording artists, producers, and engineers I also have a bunch of new videos on deck for my YouTube channel where I breakdown my process in the studio. I’ll be sharing the recording process for vocals and instruments, showing how I produce or mix down tracks from scratch, and I’ll be dissecting tracks I’ve produced for artists like Wrekonize and Jewbei amongst others. You can catch all this and anything else that’s going on by staying tuned at the @georgespits and @llamabeatsmusic IG or my YouTube channel.
