Gamertag Radio: A Podcast Story

PODCAST PHENOMENON GAMERTAG RADIO CELEBRATES 13 YEARS WITH THE RELEASE OF NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL DOCUMENTARY

The popular show, heard by hundreds of thousands a year, is the brainchild of South Florida gamer Danny Peña.

Miami, FL, February 25, 2018 – This month, Gamertag Radio, one of the longest running and most popular podcasts dedicated to gaming, celebrates 13 years with the launch of Gamertag Radio: A Podcast Story, a one-hour online documentary that tells the story of how this South Florida-based podcast got started and continues to be highly regarded by industry experts and fans alike.  The program will have its world premiere on Sunday, February 25 on the live streaming video platform Twitch at 8pm EST / 5pm PST. Later, the show will continue to be available on the same platform at: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/222940525 and in YouTube: https://youtu.be/pCFZvp9rX5E

Interweaving home video images and family photos with current interviews Gamertag Radio: A Podcast Story follows founder Danny Peña and co-hosts Peter Toledo and Parris Lilly, as they go back to the start of this adventure to give an honest, personal and never seen account of how the paths of this trio of gamers crossed to create this podcast phenomenon. It is a story of perseverance, friendship and a tutorial on how to turn a passion into a living.

“This documentary is something we wanted to do for a long time as part of the legacy we would like to leave to our families and the next generation of gamers and podcasters, “said Danny Peña, 40, founder of Gamertag Radio. “Our wish is to inspire fans and those thinking about pursuing a career in podcasting or gaming to follow their dreams and never give up.  I never gave up. I went through a lot because of the podcast and I want them to feel the same way. Work hard and never give up. And have fun while doing it.”

Radio broadcasting was a calling for New York-born Peña, the son of Dominican immigrants, who grew up surrounded and inspired by hip-hop and video games, always gravitating toward the camera and the microphone. It was Peña’s heavy involvement in the hip-hop scene that taught him to be a promoter, but his heart was always in gaming. That is why, in the Spring of 2005, a few months before iTunes launched its podcast platform, Peña, better known as Godfree in the gaming community, left the hip-hop world to launch Gamertag Radio, the successor of other online radio ventures he had started as a teenager in the 1990s, long before the arrival of smart phones and iPods.

In 2015 the renowned podcast reached two important milestones:  Gamertag Radio joined Radio.com, a website featuring top podcasts on the Internet, owned by CBS Radio and CBS Local Digital Media and Godfree became the first Hispanic to be inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. Today Gamertag Radio, which earns millions of life-time downloads and listens, is a well-respected and sought-after outlet for fans, experts and companies in the gaming community who routinely provide the podcast trio first samples of products, so they can be reviewed on the show.

Gamertag Radio: A Podcast Story was produced and edited by Danny “Godfree” Peña.
